Homemade Mint Tea with the Kids

Resilience

Today I am definitely in a better space. So, after that last post, how about some happy stuff!

Our family has been having a great time these last few days. I was out walking with the kids and found a patch of mint. My daughters were very excited.

OK. The 5 year old was excited and the 9 year old acted like she could care less. By the next day, though, they both were pumped up to go find the mint again.

Why? Well, I suggested that we could make some homemade mint tea! They loved the idea!

What’s got them so into plants? A board game created by Kimberly Gallagher called WildCraft. The girls have been really getting tuned into plants since we started playing.

(I first met Kimberly and her husband John at Wilderness Awareness School in the late 90’s. I was taking their Kamana course by mail. While I haven’t stayed in touch when I heard they had a web site up I figured I better check it out. I’m glad I did! John and Kimberly have a bunch of great looking products to check out at their web site (affiliate link.)

Back to the game. WildCraft (affiliate link) designed to be cooperative (everyone works together against a time element.) All the players go on an adventure together to gathering blueberries for Grandma to make into a pie. And they need to get back before nightfall to win the game. Along the way they run into difficulties. Which is where the plants come in. The players use the plants they gather along the way to take care of bumps, bruises, hunger, bee stings and more.

Playing WildCraft (affiliate link) is a great way to get introduced to a number of common plants in North America and what you can do with them.

Back to the mint tea. We gathered some leaves, flowers and stems for identification. Then once we positively knew what plant we had, chopped them up and made some tea for breakfast!

I have to say, that was some fantastic tea!

For our next experiment, the girls want to make a chocolate cake decorated with mint leaves. Sounds good to me!
